Many years ago Valerie was conducting a class at the Women’s Studio Workshop in upstate NY. I had enrolled in that class with no idea of what to expect or who Valerie was. But the moment she appeared I knew we were in the presence of a powerful force. She presented an assignment that shook me up. But in facing it I found direction and clarity about the images I wanted to make that has never wavered. Over the decades the look and the topics of my art have shifted but it all has roots in that time with Valerie.
Her own work is inspiring and important.
I’m glad the BMA has recognized her.
