Hiroshi Sugimoto’s seascape series reveals water and air in an equilibrium few people will ever see. In this “special night seascape”, the photograph appears to be a black void. However, the artist captures the consistent horizon line dividing the image into two equal halves. Only by careful observation, do subtle details produced by the effects of light, air, and water emerge for the viewer. Working in a serial format, Sugimoto frames time through photography. His “special night seascapes” depict his subjects—water and air—in an equilibrium few have seen. Sugimoto used a large-format 8”x10” camera for the best image quality and a long exposure to eliminate the sea’s motion. This allowed him to record the barely perceptible separation of sea and sky in blackness. The artist has explained his determination to represent “the time passages between life and death…The seascapes were there before our presence, and when our civilization is over, seascapes will still exist. Our presence is temporary.”
