Best known for her images of women and children in interior
settings, Pennsylvania-born artist Mary Cassatt spent
much of her life working in Paris. In 1894, Cassatt purchased
a country home roughly 50 miles northwest of Paris. Her
growing interest in nature and the environment led her to
begin depicting women and children in outdoor settings, as
in this print. An abandoned mill building on the property
became her printmaking studio, where she experimented
with a variety of printmaking techniques, often reworking
her printing plates and exploring innovative ways to print
in color. The inscription below the image is a personal
dedication from Cassatt to her friend George A. Lucas, who
collected many of her prints.
