Physical Qualities Cotton, 31 1/2 in. (80 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Merry Gladding Highby, Baltimore, MD.
Object Number 2009.149
Small round cotton whitework table cover, known as a "centerpiece," embroidered with floral designs and baskets and trimmed with bobbin lace border. The design consists of baskets of daisy-like flowers created with white coronation embroidery cord (a cord which is spun in alternating thick and thin diameter). The cord is laid in undulating fashion and couched down at the ends to create the petals of daisy-like flowers while the centers of the blooms are worked in knotted stitches. The baskets are created with satin stitches around cord, and the ribbons or ropes tying together the floral and basket motifs are formed with chain stitch. The centerpiece is trimmed with a heavy 2-1/2" width bobbin lace.
