In 1946, Matisse started a new book project, the "Poésies Antillaises" by French poet John-Antoine Nau. Matisse often made independent prints related to the images in publications, such as this example featuring a model, known today only as Lilian, who posed for Matisse in the mid-1940s. Here, she is depicted with just a few strokes, but her confidence is on full display. "Poésies Antillaises" was not published until almost 20 years after Matisse’s death, first due to scheduling issues and later due to his ill health. K. Rothkopf, The Sinuous Line, 12/2021
