Ambroise Vollard had intended to publish a third portfolio of prints by multiple artists in 1898 but it was never produced. However, Vuillard had already designed this atmospheric and inventive lithograph for its cover. The fantastical nature of the scene is reinforced by the inclusion of a child sleeping in an enormous basket. From this point forward, Vollard turned his attention to publishing monographic print projects, rather than albums that featured one or two prints by many different artists.
