A native of Marseilles, Monticelli spent extended periods in Paris, where he copied paintings in the Louvre and became acquainted with the Barbizon landscapist, Narcisse-Virgile Diaz de la Peña, as well as a number of the Impressionists. In the early 1870s, he returned permanently to the south of France where he occasionally painted alongside Paul Cézanne. Monticelli's bold use of color and vigorous brushwork were admired by Vincent van Gogh, who owned a number of his paintings along with his brother Theo.
