While pursuing his artistic studies at the Académie Julian in Paris in the first decade of the 20th century, Baltimorean Charles Walther was introduced to the innovative modernist styles of the Fauve and Cubist painters. These formative influences are recognizable in his bold, expressive use of color and his flat, somewhat abstracted imagery. Here, the impact of Cézanne is evident not only in Walther’s brushwork but also in his choice of a pyramidal mountain as the controlling element of the composition. The painting retains its original frame.
