Japan was another destination for large Chinese dishes beginning as early as the 15th century. Around 1600, large platters became popular status symbols for Japan's stylish urban elite who used them for luxurious banquets. By the late 17th century, when ceramic production in China was disrupted during the tumultuous transition from the Ming (1368-1644) to the Qing dynasty (1644-1722), Japanese kilns at Arita produced their own large dishes, often based on Chinese prototypes, for domestic and overseas markets.
