But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour. . .
Then the bird said “Nevermore.”
The narrator looks up to see the Raven perched upon a bust of Pallas
Athena. The Raven and his ominous shadow convey the bird’s
frightening power over the distressed narrator.
