Born in Brussels, Baugniet produces lithographic portraits first in his native Belgium and subsequently in England. In 1860, he settled in Paris where he achieved considerable success producing genre subjects and anecdotal works. From 1863, Lucas dealt regularly with the artist as he negotiated commissions on behalf of Samuel P. Avery of New York.
"Baugniet represents French women in the agreeable and ordinary but luxurious conditions of home-life in France - in curtained and perfumed boudoirs, in elegant saloons; he gratifies us but does not exalt us with such subjects; he appeals to our feelings of enjoyment and our taste of refinement. He is an accomplished painter of women of the world, of women who would resent a breach of taste in manners more than a breach of morals."
