The decoration features Thepanom, a celestial being in the Buddhist pantheon sitting on a lotus against a red background, and the semi-divine guardian Norasingh, shown against a black background. Norasingh has a human head, arms, and torso; a lion's hindquarters; and a deer's tail and hoobes. Bowls like this one were produced by Chinese potters for members of Thailand's elite to use for banquets in monasteries, palaces, and government buildings.
