Old fashioned paper backdrops and analog (as opposed to digital) photographic techniques, such as double exposure, characterize the simultaneously jewel-like and banal pictures of Elad Lassry. Through his meticulous studio practice, the artist creates images that can be placed within such traditional art historical categories as portraits, nudes, and still lifes. However, by evoking the look of vintage advertising, he renders his subjects in a slickly appealing and unapologetically superficial way. Completed with exquisitely crafted handmade frames that match the carefully chosen colors of each composition, Lassry’s works teasingly challenge viewers to determine whether they belong to the realm of fine art or the commercial world. The photographs also pose the question of whether contemporary notions of attraction, beauty, and art are influenced more by popular trends or philosophical considerations.
