This palette, dedicated to Lucas and dealer-collector, Samuel Putnam Avery, bears two portrait sketches as well as a series of figures in 18th-century costume, and a likeness of Napoleon. Its elaborate presentation corroborates the fact that it was a gift from Avery, which Lucas notes in his Diary on July 25, 1895. Domingo y Marques, a native of Valencia, Spain, was a painter of historical subjects, genre scenes, and portraits which are marked by a spirited, colorful style.
