Betel mortars and pestles are used in the absence of strong teeth, to grind the nut of the areca palm. This was mixed with lime and the leaves and seeds of the betel plant to create a mixture which is chewed. The mortars are small, portable, and are carried with other personal possessions in a net bag around the neck. Mortars can be traded or given as personal gifts.
