Chinese export ware with a central design surrounded by shaped panels is commonly referred to as kraak porcelain, a reference to the Dutch name for sailing vessels used for trade. The vessels used by the European nations was called carraca in Portugues, Genoese, and Spanish; caraque of nef in French; carrack in English; and kraak in Dutch. In 1602 and again in 1604, the Dutch captured two Portuguese vessels carrying goods from China; their auctioned cargos introduced Chinese porcelain to the Netherlands.
