Amidst the taxing pressures of society, sometimes taking a quiet moment for rest can be radical, such as the subject of Baltimore-based artist Jerrell Gibbs’ portrait For Thomas, leisurely pictured here in lush surroundings. Thomas is a poet and friend of the artist. Gibbs carefully envelops his model in a serene setting, perhaps in a blooming field at a nearby park. In his friend’s hands, Gibbs has placed a pen and notebook, the contents of which are unknown to us as viewers. Thomas is alone, appearing quite peaceful. Deep in reflection, he gazes out into the distance, and his thoughts remain impenetrable to any external gaze.
