Come Home With Me is an invitation into a family memory. The artist, age three, with a radiant smile, stands beside his late father in matching Coogi-brand sweaters. Baltimore is Jerrell Gibbs’ home; he was born, raised, and works here. Gibbs is gaining international recognition for figurative painting that records and affirms the multilayered experiences of Black Americans. He began his practice as a self-taught painter in 2014 when his wife bought him an easel for Father’s Day and by 2020 completed his MFA. Gibbs describes his painterly process as an analogy for his life: “Making paintings is all about using paint to create relationships, making adjustments, and making something out of nothing ... I have always had to make adjustments and create a way out of no way.”
