A rectangular bed quilt made from stripes of thin, solid-colored cottons (dark hunter green, purple-now dull brown, red, orange, yellow, olive and blue), each approximately 1-1/2 in. wide. A border approximately 7-1/4" wide composed of the same stripes is found on all four sides. The corners are mitred. The back is formed of 11-1/2 in. wide stripes of solid red and green cotton seamed together. The quilt is pieced by both hand and machine stitching. The body of the bedcover is quilted in diamonds within the red, orange and yellow stripes, and in rope patterns within the green, blue, olive green, and brown (originally purple) stripes. The border is quilted in a rope pattern. Quilted by hand in neat stitches numbering 12 to 13 per inch (including back and front) with a dark thread (dark blue?), probably cotton. Light cotton batting. The edges are folded over to the reverse and hemmed under approx. 1/4" with hand stitching.
Note: This pattern is sometimes shown with the field stripes in vertical position. However, in this example a hanging sleeve on one short end means that the stripes in the center of the quilt are horizontal and the border stripes are vertical. This is also the orientation in which the longest measurement is the height.
