The rate of damage in ceramic production was high. Sometimes, as in this case, stacked vessels collapsed. Air trapped within the wall of a vessel could cause an explosion; kiln debris might disfigure a glazed surface. Placement within the kiln, temperature, or duration of the firing could cause a vessel's glaze to misfire or fail to attain the intended color or effect.
