In 1933, this carved mahogany sculpture depicting the intimate embrace of a mother and her infant was included in The Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition, Painting and Sculpture from 16 American Cities. As a founding member of the Sculptors Guild in New York, Simone Brangier Boas exhibited work at the Brooklyn Museum and at the 1939 World’s Fair American Art show. Though she enjoyed national attention, Boas was dedicated to Baltimore artists. She delivered lectures on sculpture at the Baltimore Museum of Art and worked nearby at 2616 St. Paul Street, fondly called “the Little Studio,” which offered a rotating residency space for Baltimore artists. There, Boas taught art lessons to women, including fellow Baltimorean sculptor Elsa Hutzler (1906–1953).
