Using a telephoto lens, Tom McAvoy took these photographs of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt when he was attending a Democratic Party benefit dinner named in honor of Andrew Jackson. McAvoy’s “Roosevelt Recession” photo essay, published in Life on January 24, 1938, records the demeanor of the tipsy president as he listened to one of the speakers.
