While in Philadelphia in 1799, Simon Walker (1771 – 1825), an Englishman, sat to Gilbert Stuart. Apparently, this portrait found its way back to Walker’s homeland. It was eventually acquired from Walker’s descendants by a Philadelphia dealer, who then sold it to Baltimore collector Elise Agnus Daingerfield.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by bequest 1944; Elise Carroll Agnus Daingerfield, Baltimore; [private collection, England, by descent from the sitter - unconfirmed]
