Memorial tributes to Poe and Baudelaire follow one after the other in Mallarmé’s Poésies, each accompanied by a Matisse portrait. In preparation for these illustrations, the artist worked through a series of sketches. On this single sheet, he drew portraits of both Poe and Baudelaire, underscoring the connection between the American and his French translator. On the lower half of the sheet, Matisse then developed Baudelaire’s portrait more fully. This sketch became the basis for the delicate portrait etching which hangs beside it.
