In 1785, Bertin enrolled in France’s Royal Academy of Painting where
he thoroughly immersed himself in the classical tradition of French
17th-century landscape representation. He was trained to idealize
nature, carefully balancing his compositions and rendering them in
harmonious colors. Many of his best works date from the 1830s when
he began to temper his academic formulas with direct observations
of nature. Among Bertin’s many pupils was Camille Corot.
