The bandit, Gonpachi, stands at the left beside a screen, and looks over his left shoulder at his mistress, the beautiful Komurasaki who is seated beside a brazier in the right panel. She is burning letters, and looks back over her right shoulder at Gonpachi. Spanning the panels, at the center, is a lacquer stand on top of a wooden chest.
