E.J. Bellocq was a professional photographer who worked in New Orleans in the first few decades of the twentieth century. After his death, a group of eighty-nine glass plate negatives was discovered among his belongings and was later reprinted. These images depict prostitutes, clothed and undressed, from the then-legal red-light district of New Orleans known as Storyville. The anonymous women, beautifully and sympathetically portrayed, appear very much at ease with the photographer.
