In many cases, Coptic remnants are tapestry-woven wool (or wool and linen) designs either inserted into or applied onto garments of plain-woven linen or wool. The tapestry-woven areas are often composed of figural designs. These frequently appear within architectural frameworks and/or combined with animals and floral designs. This section of natural plain-woven linen is decorated with a strip containing two variations of tapestry-woven “buds.” The strip may be a fragment of a clavus (a narrow ornamental band) from a tunic, or a decorative section of a domestic textile, such as a curtain.
