Curatorial

Robin Owen Joyce (he/him) is the BMA’s first Assistant Curator of Academic Engagement. He facilitates research and teaching that center BMA collections and exhibitions, fostering closer relationships with area colleges and universities through scholarly collaborations. In his previous BMA position as the Getty Paper Project Fellow in Prints, Drawings, and Photographs (2022–2024), Dr. Joyce co-curated the exhibition Art/Work: Women Printmakers of the WPA. His forthcoming curatorial project concerns ecological approaches to the BMA’s celebrated collection of 19th century prints and drawings.

A scholar of American works on paper, Dr. Joyce earned his PhD and MA from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University and his BA from Georgetown University. His first book project, a revision of his dissertation, concerns the relationship between printmaking, muralism, and radio broadcasting in the United States in the 1930s. Dr. Joyce has published, presented, and taught on a variety of topics in the histories of printmaking, photography, and the art of the United States. His research has been supported by the Hauser & Wirth Institute and the NYU Public Humanities Initiative in Doctoral Education. Prior to his work at the BMA, Dr. Joyce held positions at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Print Center New York; and the Morgan Library & Museum.
