Art After Hours: The Culture

Join us for Baltimore’s favorite evening art party in celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip hop. The party kicks off at 8 p.m. with a live painting performance by kolpeace on the front steps. Inside the Museum, enjoy free access to The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century music by DJ Styles Bond, appetizers by H3irloom Food Group, and free samples from Topo Chico.

This summer’s Art After Hours is produced in partnership with True Laurels.

*A note on our pricing: We launched Art After Hours in 2016, and it’s grown to be one of our most popular public programs. It’s been seven years, and we need to adjust the pricing of our tickets in order to continue offering the same fun and engaging experiences that you have come to expect. We hope to see you all at our event on June 30 celebrating The Culture.

Book of Remembrance in the East Lobby.

Book of Remembrance is a durational performance and public reading conceived and produced by Tahir Hemphill and performed by Ainsley Burrows. As part of his expansive creative research practice, Hemphill has produced two bound volumes that Burroughs will read from: A 200-page book containing rappers with “Big” in their names and a 1000-page book containing rappers with “Lil” in their names.

True Laurels

True Laurels is a media platform dedicated to highlighting Baltimore + The DMV’s most captivating music, visual arts, and the surrounding culture that informs both—all of which is done through a variety of mediums. True Laurels’ print component started in 2013 and features artists from the Baltimore and DMV region through diaries, interviews, profiles, and photo essays. From August 2018 to June 2019, True Laurels broadcasted a weekly show on Red Bull Radio which intertwined music from Baltimore and The DMV with music being made throughout the African diaspora in an attempt to present the narratives of these artists as different branches of the same tree, all trying to affirm their identities through sound. Along with these components, True Laurels also serves as a digital space for people to absorb archival footage of Black Baltimore’s past, especially in areas related to the arts called Laurels History.

H3irloom Food Group

Based in Baltimore, MD, H3irloom Food Group cultivates meaningful culinary experiences that celebrate the region’s authentic foodways, culture, and community, led by Chefs David & Tonya Thomas, Linda Taliaferro (CEO), and Floyd Taliaferro IV (CFO). In addition to operating The Sinclair private event space, the company’s portfolio includes ticketed dinner experiences, catering, pop-ups, sustainable farming initiatives, and the award-winning H3 product line. H3irloom is a 100% Black-owned company with a mission to uplift the Black food narrative and provide a deeply personal approach to the Black food experience that’s rooted in history and culture. Built on a foundation of friendship and a passion for true hospitality, the three in H3irloom represents the familial bond between the founding partners as a nod to their past, present, and future together.

kolpeace

Artist “kolpeace” reflects his black southern culture & characters with murals, visual and performance art, and community art. His work is intended to encourage the love and peace he was shown growing up in the south. “kolpeace” stands for (Kids Only Love Peace), this is a black superhero that creates rapid, studio, and mural portraits of his influential past/present/future in a matter of minutes towards genres of his folk music such as (trill, trap, and soul music). Fire, spray paint, & sound are just a few engaging artistic/unique tools used by the artist to produce prolific artwork while captivating audiences within community spaces.

Styles Bond

Styles Bond is a young 25-year-old DJ from Baltimore. Styles is known for his genre-bending music selection, his ability to conform to any crowd in any setting in any city, and for being a figure for his community & peers. Within his 7 years of DJing, his one-of-a-kind talents have allowed him the opportunity to tour internationally. Styles has toured on the road multiple times to perform with music artists. He also tours on his own around the country for his crowd-shaking DJ sets. But don’t get it confused, Djing isn’t the limit for this young creative. Styles is also a creative director, designer, photographer/videographer, music producer, actor, host, and is always looking for new skills to put under his belt.

Tahir Hemphill

Tahir Hemphill is a creative technologist whose work focuses on the role systems play in the generation of form and the ways collaborative knowledge production assists in community enrichment. Hemphill’s work straddles art, technology and research. The frameworks that support these influences are synthesized into his creative pursuits at the Rap Research Lab, where they catalyze critical discourse and influence tech policy through the production of VR, AI, and community data projects. Tahir is the 4th Chair in Education at the Library of Congress, the inaugural 2021 UMBC Faculty Diversity in the Arts Fellow, 2019 Verizon 5G EdTech Challenge winner, 2019 Saul Zaentz Innovation Fund in Film and Media Studies Fellow, 2018 LACMA Art + Technology Lab Grantee, 2016 Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Resident, 2016 Spotify Media Artist-in-Residence, 2015 NEA Art Works Grantee, 2012 Du Bois Institute Fellow at Harvard University and 2012 Creative Capital Awardee.
