Contributors Brunch & Talk: LaToya Ruby Frazier

Join Jessica Bell Brown, Executive Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and former Curator of Contemporary Art at the BMA, and LaToya Ruby Frazier for an enlightening and immersive conversation about the profound installation LaToya Ruby Frazier: More Than Conquerors: A Monument for Community Health Workers of Baltimore, Maryland 2021-2022.

Using a striking series of portraits and testimonies—each mounted on 18 socially distanced, stainless-steel IV poles—LaToya Ruby Frazier brings to life a powerful narrative. This evocative installation pays tribute to the heroic efforts of Baltimore community health workers, frontline public health professionals who offer guidance to people navigating the healthcare system. Frazier’s work offers a fresh perspective on how we honor those who contribute to our communities. The installation not only celebrates the resilience and dedication of these vital workers but also invites us to reflect on the broader implications of monument making and the narratives we choose to elevate.
