Council Day Tour: The Matter of Bark Cloth
From Africa to the Americas and from Asia to Oceania, artists have worked with bark cloth for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The materiality of this medium—supple yet sturdy and with an ability to absorb pigments and paint—has allowed it to be used in an array of artistic projects.
The Matter of Bark Cloth, on view through October 1, is a two-gallery installation that presents a selection of bark cloth, largely from the BMA’s collection, and explores the importance of this material across varied states, societies, and cultures.
Invitations to this Members-only event will be mailed.
This exhibition is supported by the Victor J. Schenk Trust.
