JJC Talks: Lauren Lyde in conversation with Sheena Morrison

About the Artist and Curator:

Lauren R. Lyde is a realist painter whose work considers the full range of human sentiment involved in forming meaningful interpersonal relationships. She obtained a BS in Visual Communication from Towson University. Lyde studied Illustration at Pratt Institute and Exhibition Design at the Corcoran School of Art before earning a MFA in Community Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art. She currently works as a teaching artist for a non-profit arts organization in the city of Baltimore.

Sheena M. Morrison is an independent curator based in Baltimore. Her practice is informed by her decade long professional experience as a public historian and her interest in the intersection of politics, social activism and contemporary art. To broaden what is already a very personal and social commitment, her recent exhibitions have sought to illuminate the narrative capacity of art to generate new ideas and excavate hidden assumptions about culture and society: Everyday Utopias (2017); When Living is a Protest (2018); Sitting Pretty (2018); The Notable Letter Hh (2020) The Collective Wonder of Being There (2021) She holds an MFA in curatorial practice from Maryland Institute College of Art, an MPhil in public health history from Columbia University and an MPH in community health education from Hunter College. She currently works at Arts Every Day, a non-profit arts organization in Baltimore City.

About the Joshua Johnson Council (JJC):

Joshua Johnson Council (JJC) Members share a passion for African American and African art. Named after an 18th-century African American portrait painter who lived and worked in Maryland, the JJC is one of the oldest African American museum support groups in the U.S. Its mission is to forge meaningful connections between Baltimore’s African American communities and The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) by promoting and highlighting the achievements of African American artists.

JJC Membership offers a wide range of opportunities for active participation within a network of friends and colleagues dedicated to art, education, community, and family. JJC programs and meetings take place on the second Thursday of each month.
