The art of Kakembo reflects a deep reverence for Africa’s rich heritage, connecting the land, the artisans, and their craft. In her own words, “Africa is the source, and without nature’s bounty there, there would be no Africa—and no us.” Her collaboration with artisans across the continent, particularly through her studio, xN Studio, weaves together the stories of skilled craftsmen and the earth’s elements. From the timeless aroma of Ugandan baskets to the delicate fermentation of Mali’s indigo dyes, each piece captures a moment of cultural legacy and environmental harmony.
Featured in her new book, this special collection that Kakembo co-developed with artisans is a tribute to the expert–earth collaboration that defines her practice. Her work, which celebrates both beauty and history, will be available for purchase at the BMA Shop during this special evening.
