About the Artist
Huaqi Liu is a Chinese-born, New Jersey-based painter whose work contemplates the ephemeral beauty and metaphysical weight of clouds. Drawing on the poetic association between “cloud” and “destiny” embedded in the Chinese language, Liu’s practice weaves together personal history, cultural symbolism, and material experimentation. His paintings trace the shifting forms of clouds as a metaphor for the forces—visible and invisible—that shape human experience. As an immigrant artist, Liu reflects on themes of identity, belonging, and transformation, grounding his work in both lived experience and academic research into migration and material symbolism. Liu received his B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from SUNY New Paltz and his M.F.A. from the Leroy E. Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he was awarded a merit scholarship and completed a teaching certificate. His work has been exhibited at the Arts Club of Washington, ARC Gallery in Chicago, BWAC in Brooklyn, Rhode Island Watercolor Society, Peninsula School of Art, and Waller Gallery in Baltimore. He has taught drawing and art appreciation at Baltimore City Community College and Baltimore City public high schools. He also participated in The Blooming Rainbow Project, a cross-cultural youth art initiative recognized by a Mayoral Certificate of Recognition from Baltimore City.
About the Traditional Chinese Watercolor Workshop
Join artist Huaqi Liu for a hands-on exploration of traditional Chinese watercolor. In this workshop, participants will get a glimpse into the history and philosophy behind this centuries-old art form—one that celebrates the harmony between people and the natural world. Liu will share insights from his own artistic practice before guiding participants through basic brush techniques. Using traditional tools, participants will have the chance to experiment and create their own watercolor artwork to take home. No prior experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to play with ink and brush!
