Shinque Smith: Grace Stands Beside

Exhibition Video

Take in Shinique Smith’s newest sculpture, Grace Stands Beside, in this virtual gallery walk presented by The Baltimore Museum of Art. The sculpture’s title comes from an inscription—“Glory Stands Beside Our Grief”—on the base of the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument that once stood on Mount Royal Ave in Baltimore. ⁣ ⁣ Using hand-dyed garments and vintage fabrics from family, friends, and Baltimore residents, Smith created her own deity-like figure as a monument to “grace,” defined by the artist as “a complex state of being that Black people and others who have endured tragic prejudice have embodied to survive and to rise beyond.”
