For several years, Jeremiah Hoffman represented his father’s dry goods firm, Peter Hoffman and Sons, in London. In 1814, he married Emily Tilghman and eventually settled at Chatsworth Hill, his estate in west Baltimore. Jeremiah and Emily Hoffman’s daughter, Harriet Emily, who was born in England, is shown here as a young woman in her late teens holding her father’s arm. Harriet eventually married Henry Thomas Weld, an Englishman from Southampton, and returned with him to live in western Maryland.
