Contributors Brunch & Talk: The Way of Nature

Celebrate The Way of Nature: Art from Japan, China, and Korea, a new exhibition exploring how East Asian cultures have long viewed humanity as part of the larger, interconnected natural world.

Unlike the human-centered tradition common in Western art, the objects here reveal a worldview where mountains, seas, and animals—even insects—hold symbolic power and spiritual meaning. Ranging across time from the 12th to 21st centuries and scale, from the monumental to the minute, the natural world is shown not as something to dominate but as a source of strength, balance, and inspiration. Featuring highlights from the BMA’s collection, the exhibition also reflects on changing relationships with nature. Some works present ever-present features of the landscape, and others its endlessly changing aspects. Contemporary artists address the impact of human presence, while their predecessors proposed the advantage of a broader vision.

Join us for light brunch, conversation, and a guided talk led by Frances Klapthor, Interim Department Head, Arts of Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific Islands and Associated Curator of Asian Art, as we explore whether these images serve as warnings or as lasting reminders of nature’s enduring power and beauty.
